ShaoLin CogoFS (Cogo
File System) is a high-performance and reliable stackable
kernel-based compression file system for Linux. It works
transparently on top of all common file systems
and even network-based file systems. ShaoLin CogoFS compresses
files and stores them in compressed form to
multiply your hard disk space, increases I/O access
speed, and reduces network traffic.

ShaoLin CogoFS is designed for
high performance, reliability, and easy migration. It also
fills in the gaps for Linux, where there
is no known stable compression file systems. Previous
systems that performed compression and decompression with slow
CPUs on virtual-volume compression file systems may have
been slow and unreliable. ShaoLin CogoFS does not
use virtual volumes, it presents compressed files in
your existing file systems as normal files. Corruption
risk is minimal because compression is done on
individual files. As we know the speed of
CPU has dramatically increased in the pass few
years, decompression speeds can easily outperform most uncompressed
disks transfer speeds with today's fast CPUs because
the compressed file system will significantly reduce actual
data transfer to and from the physically-slow hard
disk media.
Speeding up your network with lower cost
ShaoLin CogoFS differs from other block level compression
file systems, such as DoubleSpace, Stacker, and NTFS
it does not manage disk blocks. ShaoLin CogoFS
works transparently on top of all common file
systems and even network-based file systems, like NFS.
More important than just saving disk space, ShaoLin
CogoFS works over the network, transferring compressed files
to the CogoFS on the client to decompress,
so the file server does not experience additional
processing load. This reduces network traffic, increases the
capacity of the file server's disk, improves disk
bandwidth and reduces the file server load (less
data to transfer). The file server will have
more cache hits due to more data fitting
into the cache. This innovative design benefits all
network-based file access and transfers.
Migration free compression technology
ShaoLin CogoFS achieves the same high compression rates
as other compression tools like ZIP. The files
compressed by ShaoLin CogoFS can mix with the
uncompressed files so no migration time is needed.
The compression conversion process is done online without
rebooting the machine. Ideal to upgrade your server
with no extra migration work.
